Biosec + CRH Improves Brooding Performance
Poultry raisers may as well use Biosec-treated carbonized rice hull(CRH), rather than raw rice hull, as their little during brooding. This improves the broodling performance of chicken, resulting in heavier weight of broilers and increased eggs of layers. At the same time, Biosec minimizes the obnoxius odor of chicken manure and converts it into an effective bioorganic fertilizer.
Formulated by Dr. Rene Sumaoang of Novatech Agri-Food Industries, Biosec is composed of immobilized beneficial microbes and potent digestive enzymes that digest and degrade fresh chicken manure. It works well both under conventional brooding and in tunnel vent production systems.
In fact, Magnolia has already given Novatech the go-signal to talk with its contract growers to use this new method, especially those who are using the tunnel vent production system, which is totally enclosed. Espino Farm in Sugallon, Pangasinan, owned by Congressman Amado Espino, is now all out in using Biosec-treated CRH after using it in just two grows in tunnel vent systems.
Dr. Sumaoang said that by applying Biosec on the CRH or on the manure, billions of beneficial microbes are being introduced into the chicken manure. The beneficial microbes multiply rapidly and subsequently produce microbial products that inhibit the growth and proliferation of deadly microbes like Escherichia coli, salmonella and the like.
The enzymes in Biosec break down the food nutrients in the chicken manure into simpler forms that can be absorbed by the roots of plants.
For brooding, 0.5 kilogram (kg) of Biosec is applied on seven to IO bags of CRH, which is used as litter for 1,000 birds for 14 days. The waste of the birds is mixed with the litter. Thereafter, the litter is collected and can be used later as bio-organic fertilizer, according to Dr. Sumaoang. However, the use of Biosec must still be continued.
After brooding until the broilers are harvested, Biosec (15 kg per 5,000 birds) is applied on the manure which falls on the ground. In a tunnel vent system, like those used by Magnolia and Tyson, 2 kg of Biosec is spread on the litter of every 1,000 birds after brooding. In egg production, 20 kg of Biosec is applied on the manure of every 5,000 birds every three months.
Normally, raw rice hull is used as chicken litter. However, this material is a poor absorbent material, as its silica content is still bound inside the hull. Without Biosec, the chicken manure emits dangerous sulfide and ammonia gases, which produce foul odor and trigger respiratory diseases in the birds.
Moreover, the litter becomes the host of deadly microbes and poses a continuing problem on its disposal as it cannot be used as organic fertilizer.
With Biosec on the litter, Dr. Sumaoang said, the emission of ammonia and sulfide gases as well as foul odor is minimized, thereby reducing mortality rate. Likewise, flies are no longer attracted to the decomposing chicken manure.
Biosec treatment of CRH results in better ability of the birds to produce meat or eggs, ensures total biosecurity, and makes CRH an effective bioorganic fertilizer. The feathers of the birds also do not become discolored. Death of birds is greatly reduced by 30 to 40 percent. Consequently, medication cost is also greatly reduced.
In layer production, reduced death rate is translated into higher income as more birds are laying in any given period.
In Bantayan Island, Cebu, the egg basket of the Visayas, Biosec treatment of CRH has resulted in 1 percent to 5 percent increase of egg laying performance. With an increase of 2 percent, for instance, 5,000 birds would produce an additional 25,550 eggs a year. If each egg costs P3, the increase in production would be worth P76,650.
On the other hand, if the increase in production is 5 percent, an additional 63,875 eggs worth P191,625 would be produced From 5,000 birds in one year.
Given 100,000 layers, the poultry owner would have an additional net income of P1.133 million or P3.4325 million with 2 percent or 5 percent increase in egg production, respectively. The annual cost of Biosec treatment is only P20,000 for 5,000 layers or P’400,000 for 100,000 birds.
In broilers, a 2 percent increase in production from 26,000 birds would result in an additional 780 kg of meat worth P42,000. The cost of 200 kg of Biosec is only P6,000, resulting in an additional net gain of P36,000.

What Protein % is Best for Laying Chickens?
It depends. It all depends on the quality of the protein in the feed. Crude protein numbers don't mean very much since crude protein is an easy thing to manipulate if a manufacturer is just building a feed that will assay out at their label percentage. The numbers that really mean something are these two: lysine % and methionine %. Those should be on the label. I'd set the floor at .85% for lysine and .47% for the methionine. That could be anywhere from 17% crude protein up. You may need 19-20% to achieve that. The more filler junk is in there the higher the crude protein level will need to be to get to those numbers for the amino acids lysine and methionine.
Most mills do not formulate by amino acid because doing that is a relatively new method and doesn't really pay them back. It pays back the birds and their owner, but it doesn't necessarily give you a high number for CP for the label and that is what feed store feeds are generally judged upon.
So -- short answer is -- look at the lysine and methionine numbers on the label and pick a feed with .85% lysine, .47% methionine, or as close to it as you can get.

Pictures Updated Dec 21 ,2010-Superior F-1 and Dominant CZ
Have three different batches.
We now have Hubbard white 45 day broilers. Colored Hubbard (Superior F-1) slow grow broilers as well as Dominant CZ layers.
The Colored Hubbard s (Superior F-1 ) broilers and the Dominant CZ are new to me.
IN the pictures note that you dont see many birds....thats due to the effectiveness of the Hover Brooders.....only the ones that are feeling warm are out side the Hover eating and drinking...the others are still under it...get nice and warm..... , They come and go as they feel the need for heat or the lack of it......under it there is no place for pile ups either,as usually a pile occurs in corners...there are no corners in the Hover....so they dont pile and die.
Air plane was very stressful for the latest chicks........Dominant CZ were born Spet1,2010 and Colored Hubbard bornSept3,2010.......they arrived in Manila Air port at 5:30 am......scheduled to arrive Bacolod at 9:30 am....but the plane had engine failure prior to take off so they had to wait....................and ait.....finally arrived Bacolod-Silay at 12 noon....arrived at their brooder about 1 pm
all were active and seemed healthy except for the 5 male Dominant CZ........put them in the "hospital" for special doses of brown Sugar water for electrolyte replacement all afternoon.......but even they seemed to have recovered enough to join the others under the Hover brooder....we'll see if they stay healthy and active.The 5 were not moving at all...the brown sugar water perked them up slowly.

The old " tarp " roof lasted only about 14 months due to sun kiling it.We will try Nipa this time......have invested P7000 so far and still need to spend about P4000 more for fish netting to hold the Nipa down

My Girl had a baby
Rosemel.......1/2 Lab and 1/2 Pitt Bull gave birth yesterday..........she is only two years old herself......the father is 1/2 German Shepard and 1/2 Japanese Spitz.
Both mother and father are great with our other animals..... Will post pictures as soon as they upload.

New Hover Brooder-updated Nov 26
Pictures today are of one of my two new brooders......
4 feet by 4 feet
sides are 12 inches each and the legs extend 12 inches below the sides......
The advantage are that the chicks go under it if they are cold......or out from under if not, as it has a solid top, the raising heat has nowhere to go......

More Information About Grass-Fed Eggs
Are grass-fed eggs really more nutritious?
Yes. This has been known forever. It's mentioned in books on poultrykeeping from the Forties (see Jull's "Successful Poultry Management," 1943), and gets verified from time to time even now.
Mother Earth News did an article, Meet Real Free-Range Eggs a couple of years ago that tested a number of grass-fed eggs (including mine), and demonstrated that, compared to ordinary supermarket eggs, they had:
* 1/3 less cholesterol
* 1/4 less saturated fat
* 2/3 more vitamin A
* 2 times as much Omega-3 fatty acid
* 7 times as much beta carotene
The thing I find amusing about grass-fed eggs is that they have high levels of the fad nutrient du jour, and always did, even before the nutrient became fashionable. Confinement operators spend millions of dollars trying to chase after fad nutrients, while grass-fed eggs always seem to be there already.
Grass-fed hens eat their greens, while confinement hens eat nothing fresh at all. It makes a big difference.
The ultimate test of nutrition. The ultimate test of an egg is whether it can hatch into a healthy chick. For decades, breeder hens (whose eggs are are put into incubators for hatching) were kept on grassy range, since eggs from confinement hens didn't hatch very well. It's hard to make a clearer case for the nutritional value of grass than that.
These days, poultry nutrition is very well understood, and breeder hens lay eggs with excellent hatchability without being grass-fed. But this is true only if they are fed a special breeder ration. Hens laying table eggs are fed a cheaper ration that's comparatively deficient, meaning that the eggs in the supermarket are much less nutritious than they could be.
Could confinement eggs be as nutritious as grass-fed eggs? Certainly. Do enough people care enough to support a high-nutrition confinement egg industry? Beats me. It's not a branch of the biz that appeals to me.
